Changes in time-frequency patterns of myoelectric signals during prolonged running

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Recent developments in wavelet techniques allow the time and frequency components of EMG signals to be analyzed simultaneously. The resulting patterns of the EMG can provide new and more detailed insight into how muscles are used during physical activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the time-frequency content of the EMG signals which occur during prolonged runs.

Variations in motor unit recruitment patterns occur within and between muscles in the running rat (Rattus norvegicus).
Motor units are generally considered to follow a set, orderly pattern of recruitment within each muscle with activation occurring in the slowest through to the fastest units. A growing body of evidence, however, suggests that recruitment patterns may not always follow such an orderly sequence. Here we investigate whether motor unit recruitment patterns vary within and between the ankle extensor...
متن کاملMotor units are recruited in a task-dependent fashion during locomotion.
Muscle fibres have a range of contractile properties from fast to slow. Traditional understanding of muscle fibre recruitment suggests that the slower fibres within a mixed muscle are used for all contractions including those at rapid speeds. However, mechanical arguments predict that some locomotor tasks are best performed by solely the faster fibres. Motor recruitment patterns can be indicate...

Mammalian skeletal muscles are composed of a mixture of motor unit types, which contribute a range of mechanical and physiological properties to the muscle. For a muscle to effectively contribute to smooth, co-ordinated movement it must activate an appropriate number and combination of motor units to generate the required force over a suitable time period. Much evidence exists indicating that m...
متن کاملMotor unit recruitment patterns 2: the influence of myoelectric intensity and muscle fascicle strain rate.
To effectively meet the force requirements of a given movement an appropriate number and combination of motor units must be recruited between and within muscles. Orderly recruitment of motor units has been shown to occur in a wide range of skeletal muscles, however, alternative strategies do occur. Faster motor units are better suited to developing force rapidly, and produce higher mechanical p...
متن کاملIncreased intensity and reduced frequency of EMG signals from feline self-reinnervated ankle extensors during walking do not normalize excessive lengthening.
Kinematics of cat level walking recover after elimination of length-dependent sensory feedback from the major ankle extensor muscles induced by self-reinnervation. Little is known, however, about changes in locomotor myoelectric activity of self-reinnervated muscles. We examined the myoelectric activity of self-reinnervated muscles and intact synergists to determine the extent to which patterns...
